The theories for reinforced concrete (RC) are largely empirical/semi-empirical until today. Even the most rational theory in RC, the flexural design theory, is still semi-empirical, where the stress block parameters are determined from flexural tests of RC beams. The speaker tries to develop more rational theories and technologies for RC in the last two decades. Some new developments in RC are reported in this forum, including the theorems for flexural design of RC members, new technology for evaluating existing shear strength models, failure localization of materials and structures and the mitigation approach, fused structures, compression-cast high-strength low-carbon concrete, modelling and research methods, etc.
